{"id":167,"date":"2018-07-29T02:56:23","date_gmt":"2018-07-29T02:56:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/integrativewellnessandmovement.com\/iwmbasicscience\/?p=167"},"modified":"2018-09-05T23:03:35","modified_gmt":"2018-09-05T23:03:35","slug":"07282018bone-surface-features","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/integrativewellnessandmovement.com\/iwmbasicscience\/medicalerminology\/07282018bone-surface-features\/","title":{"rendered":"Medical Terminology: Bone Surface Features"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.integrativewellnessandmovement.com\/iwmstudentresources\/MedicalTerminology-bones.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download this worksheet here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Bone surface descriptors (form) also give us clues to their function.<\/p>\n<p>Depressions and\/or openings allow the passage\/formation of soft tissue.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>fissure<\/strong>: narrow slit\/groove\/cleft as a passageway for vessels\/nerves.<\/li>\n<li><strong>foramen<\/strong>: opening (hole-like) allowing a passageway for vessels\/nerves\/ligaments.<\/li>\n<li><strong>fossa<\/strong>: shallow depression\/trench.<\/li>\n<li><strong>fovea<\/strong>: rounded depression.<\/li>\n<li><strong>sulcus<\/strong>: furrow or linear groove along a bone accomodating\u00a0vessels\/nerves\/tendons.<\/li>\n<li><strong>meatus<\/strong>: tubelike opening\/passageway.<\/li>\n<li><strong>notch<\/strong>: indentation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>sinus<\/strong>: cavity\/space.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Processes which are prominent projections\/outgrowths (something sticking out) allowing formation of joints or attachment points for soft tissue.<\/p>\n<p>Joint Processes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>condyle<\/strong>: large, round protuberance\/process at end of bone\u00a0for\u00a0articulation.<\/li>\n<li><strong>facet<\/strong>: smooth, flat articular surface.<\/li>\n<li><strong>head<\/strong>: rounded articular projection supported on the neck (narrow portion) of bone; enlargement at end of bone.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Attachment Processes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>crest<\/strong>: prominent ridge\/long projection on bone.<\/li>\n<li><strong>epicondyle<\/strong>: smaller condyle\/process\/projection above (&#8220;epi&#8221;) the condyle.<\/li>\n<li><strong>line (linea)<\/strong>: long narrow ridge\/long projection that not as severe\/distinguished as a crest.<\/li>\n<li><strong>ramus<\/strong>: a large\/substantial mass of bone protruding from a body<\/li>\n<li><strong>spinous processes<\/strong>: sharp slender projection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>trochanter<\/strong>: large, blunt process\/projection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>tubercle<\/strong>: small, knob-like process\/projection.<\/li>\n<li><strong>tuberosity<\/strong>: large, rounded, typically rough-like projection.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Reference<\/p>\n<p>Bliven,\u00a0K.
