New Zealand Paua

It is no surprise that my ULTIMATE FAVORITE seashell is the New Zealand Paua.

Paua is the Maori name. In the U.S. and Australia, people may use the common name “abalone” shell. The most beautiful & magnificent paua are found off the New Zealand coasts. Paua come from three large edible snails Family Haliotidae and Genus Haliotis. They are found in the shallower waters (1-10 m) in rocky coastlines.

Paua, Haliotis iris, Blackfoot Paua. Queen Paua, Haliotis australis, Silver Paua, Yellow Foot Paua, Hihiwa and Karariwha. Virgin Paua or Haliotis virginea.

Pink Abalone

Haliotis corrugata.

These shells are found along the Pacific Coast–Point Conception, CA to Baja California Sur.

Du Petit’s Spindle

Fusinus dupetitthouarsi.

These shells from the Panama region are ridged and white with some hints of tan/brown

Distaff Spindle

Fusinus colus.

These Indo-West Pacific snail shells are narrow and long with one end that is straighter and straw-like, and the other bulkier end with the textured spiral. They are usually ribbed white with slight faint orange/brown markings at the spindle’s top.

Delicate Tibia

Tibia delicatula.

These may be found in the very deep waters of the Arabian sea. Their shell is naturally glossy and creamy white, beiges, and tans.

Red Abalone

Haliotis rufescens (red abalone).

These awesome abalone creatures may be found along the rocky shores and tidepools of British Columbia, Canada to Baja, California to Mexico (more prolific in the southern regions). They are among the largest in size of abalones found along the Pacific Coast.

Philippine Miter Shells

Philippine Miter Shells.

These are found in shallower waters and range from white with pinks, oranges, and orange-reds. The shape is a narrow spiral with ribs and/or banding patterns.
